Purchasing Our Coffees

Farmer Brothers purchases the finest green coffees from around the world. Before Farmer Brothers purchases green coffee, samples are provided so that we can evaluate the quality of the green beans.

The process of tasting coffee is called "cupping" and all the green coffee samples are carefully evaluated in our "cupping room". The coffee samples are visually inspected, then roasted, ground and infused with near boiling water. Since the water is poured directly over the grounds a crust is created over the surface of the glass cup. The cupper stirs the grounds and smells the coffee to experience its aroma, and then using a spoon will take a sample of the coffee from the glass and forcefully sip it into his mouth. The idea is to get the coffee evenly spread over the taste buds so that they can experience the flavor before spitting it out, they never swallow. Once we accept the sample, it is marked so that when the shipment arrives we can test that the sample matches the shipment.

This process of "cupping" is also used when blending our coffees and our expert cuppers are exceptional at evaluating each of our blends and keeping our coffees “consistently good”.
